Custom Jewelry is Hot with Today’s Brides

Today’s bridal consumer is no doubt difficult to understand and somewhat hard to reach.  The concept of getting married while deeply rooted in our western culture has developed a different meaning compared to couples of generations past.  Individuality and expression have become synonymous with wedding planning and certainly with the couple’s choice in bridal jewelry and wedding accessories.   This can be seen in the surge of themed wedding events and personalized custom engagement rings and wedding rings.

Andy Moquin owner of Andrews Jewelers in Buffalo NY, head jewelry designer states….”Never before in the history of the jewelry industry has there been such an opportunity to procure a place in your local market as an expert and provider of custom jewelry design services.”  Recent advances in 3D printing and design software afford custom jewelers the ability to provide their customers with almost any style or personalized concept they set their hearts on.  Moquin adds “There’s simply no limitation to what you can provide a couple today when it comes to custom made jewelry.  Jewelers with a firm grasp of the current technology used in jewelry making are in the driver’s seat while serving the custom jewelry marketplace.”

Companies like Amazon and Jet have commoditized the retail shopping experience and caused prices to tumble on items like clothing and jewelry.  While this may seem like a benefit to jewelry shoppers it comes ata price, the styles available online are commonplace and generally poorly made Chinese imports.  Moquin says “It’s hard for online retailers to be price leaders and fashion-forward at the same time.  These are two different business models and if the Amazons of the world are going to be the low cost providers they have to sacrifice style and uniqueness.”  This is where the opportunity presents itself for localized jewelry retailers, with the ability to be face to face with the bride and groom.

It’s worth stating that traditional brick and mortar jewelers still have their work cut out for them when trying to capture the local bridal business.  To be successful, a jeweler must good at assimilating the wants and needs of their perspective customer and they must also have the ability to design jewelry that is expressive of those exact wants and needs.  Moquin further states “I’ve been designing and selling custom engagement rings in Buffalo NY for nearly 30 years, some things haven’t changed through those years and that is communication is key.  To be great at selling custom jewelry you must be able to identify why the bride wants custom in the first place and then create designs that represent those desires.”

The final stage of this process is of course in the execution and completion of the custom jewelry process.  Simply having the skills to make custom jewelry isn’t enough, the item must be fashionable and stylish as well.  “I’ve seen thousands of custom made items through the years, some of it great and some of it crude.  My best advice for a bride and groom is to ask for examples of previous works from the jeweler they’re considering.  If the items in their portfolio don’t appeal to you then there’s a good chance the jewelry they’ll make for you won’t either.” Adds Andy Moquin.  Refinement and delicacy are all part of the custom jewelry design process, an amazing custom ring shouldn’t look custom-made.  That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look unique, it means that it shouldn’t look like there was a struggle making it.  Finely made jewelry always looks purposeful and elegant much like a perfectly performed symphony sounds.

Custom Jewelry Design: What you need to know

Every relationship is unique, and we believe that your jewelry should be a representation of that unique love. Some people achieve this with certain metals, gemstones and diamond placement and others want to add personal touches different from any piece of jewelry they have seen or tried on. If this has been your experience, the custom jewelry design process might be for you!

The Process:

Latest computer design software is used to create computer images

The computer software communicates with our 3D printer for a wax model of the piece.

The wax model allows the customer to see the exact size and shape of the ring for fit and accuracy.

We then use the wax to create a mold; the mold is then used to cast the ring in the metal of your choice.

The rough cast is then polish and refinished, any diamonds or gemstones are set by an in-house jeweler using 60 times magnification.

The finished piece will be a refined high quality jewelry piece.
